Applied Flute Lessons:
The flute studio is made up of undergraduate and graduate music education and performance majors as well as students in the music minor degree program. Each student in the Penn State flute studio will be offered an hour-long weekly private lesson with Dr. Seidman.
In order to foster a rich learning environment Dr. Seidman assigns each flute student a lesson partner per semester. Partners attend each other’s lessons each week and witness first hand valuable teaching tools, study repertoire and technique, and see each other’s progress throughout the semester. Partners are re-assigned each semester.
Music majors today plan a wide variety of careers, including band directors, rock stars, music therapists, business-owners, music historians, composers, repair and flute design technicians and concert flutists. At Penn State Dr. Seidman emphasizes the critical mentoring role played by a teacher. During your study at Penn State University, she will help you realize your hopes and dreams for the future.
Studio Class:
Dr. Seidman also offers a repertoire/technique class that is an hour and a half long. Topics from technique to performance as well as flute choir are addressed.
Flute Choir:
The Penn State Flute Choir presents a unique opportunity for students to learn basic to advanced chamber music skills. The ensemble is open to majors, minors and non-majors alike and enrollment is by audition with the instructor. The Flute Choir performs from a vast repertoire of original works and transcriptions of classical standards. The students perform with and without a conductor and spend time working on cueing, blending, intonation, musicality, playing solos and accompaniments and working with others in a fun and challenging environment. Students are also encouraged to become acquainted with the auxiliary instruments of the flute family. In 2013 and 2015 The Penn State Flute Choir was invited to perform at the National Flute Association Convention annual meeting. Dr. Seidman is the director of the Penn State flute choir which rehearses weekly and offers a concert each semester.
Guest Artists:
Every semester Dr. Seidman invites professional flutists to come to the Penn State campus to give recitals and master classes.
